This system will give you great sound and picture and will allow you to grow with technology as it becomes available.  You may want to get a BlueRay player rather than an upscaling DVD player but it will put you over your budget.  The PS3 is considered by many to be one of the best BlueRay players currently available.

  2. Onkyo HT-SR800.

  3. I didn't think it possible to get a good sound system for five hundred but mrnoskis's come close. He's on the right track by buying the pieces individually but I don't think you should buy the speakers as a 'box set'. I think  you should buy those piece by piece also.

Start off with a killer set of mains followed by an modest set of rears. See if you really need a center or can you use your tv's built ins. Do you really need a center and a sub or do your main's carry all the base and voice you need? More is not always better. More sometimes just mucks things up when poor quality components are used.

Audition each and keep what you like.
