Which humidifier to get for baby? Hot or cold?

I heard that cold mist humidifiers carry bacteria if you are not careful. On the other hand, steam vaporizers are more sterile. I want to get the right one for my 11 week old baby. Overall, which would be more sanitary?

My 11 week old is sick, too! It's clear crud coming out of her nose, but she's choking on it! I called the Dr.'s office today to see what else I could do. I'm doing the saline spray (She likes that better then the drops...not that she likes it at all, but ya know), she HATES the bulb, but I do it, too. I've had the cool mist humidifier on for over a week and it seemed like it was helping before, now she's sick again. She sounds worse then she did before. They said to use the vaporizer without the Vicks stuff in it and also take her into the bathroom after I've had the hot water running and talk to her for like 10 minutes at a time. She told me not to do the baby Vicks. So I have no idea! Any idea's would be greatly appreciated here, too!!!!!

We have a cool mist humidifier.

I know for the most part the hot ones have new precautions but still carry the risk of burning the child if he/she comes in contact with one.

My little sister was burned when she was little. She had a cast covering her mid section for a while.

I would think cool mist is more sanitary. Hospitals keep environments cool because in warm environments germs can breed.

we have one I even helps me breath better

Change filters reguarly.  that why people say the are not as sterile.  They take a little more maintance, but you NEED cools mist humidifier especialy for a child so young.  The steam can permentaly damange her lungs.

pediatricians recommend cool mist for the simple reason that you can't knock over hot water and you can't burn yourself on the steam.  as long as you're cleaning the humidifier and changing the filters as instructed, they are both equally sanitary.
