  1. A Hybrid SUV commands a substantually higher price than the non hybrid versions now a days.  Even with gas at $4 a gallon, it will take a heck of a long time to pay off the difference.  There are pretty much no incentives or rebates, and hybrid versions typically cost $2000 - $4000 more on top of not getting any cash back.  I bet a Highlander hybrid is about $5000 more.  The standard gets 19mpg, and the hybrid gets 23mpg.  Over the course of 100k miles a hybrid will save you about $3600+ in gas.  So if you want to recoup all that money you spent, it will take well over 100k miles to do it.

While it could be argued a hybrid will be worth more in trade, no one really knows how long the batteries will last and as you creep close to 100k a lot of people will be very leary of replacing a $3000 battery.  And that extra $5000 is being financed for 5 yrs at 6-7% interest, so it is more like $6000+.

All that idiotic rambling aside, a Highlander overall is an excellent choice.  There is a Yukon Hybrid, but expect to pay at least $45000 for it.  I cannot think of any other 3 row hybrid.  As SUV's tend to be heavier and have the aerodynamics of a brick, they do not benefit from hybrid motors as much.

There will be some very good diesels making there way stateside.  Not sure if you would consider that or not.  I don't know of any that will be in SUV's in your price range though.  Plus the extra cost of diesel fuel partially negates any savings at the pump.

  2. Like the other answerer, I wonder why two kids means you need three rows of seats.  I'd think one of the slightly smaller hybrid SUVs like the Ford Escape or the Saturn Vue would be a better value than the Highlander.

  3. well i know your wondering wich hybrid car to get  but if your getting a hybrid to be "earth friendly"  than i highly advise not to get one because they did a study and it turns out its not really that earth friendly but if your getting one for some other reason then i suggest the toyota prius

  5. Hybrids are such a load of c**p...several studies have been done and for what you pay and what you will have to pay to dispose of the car when the batteries are dead...you save nothing.  NOTHING!  Needing third row seating, Nav system, XM radio...you will need a better car than the Highlander.  With two kids why do you need the third row seating?  I can seat two kids and lots of stuff in my Jeep Patriot.  You can always add the DVD player & XM radio, and Verizon had an awesome nav system that I use in my Patriot.
