I am in the middle northern hemisphere and hear these insects making noise now in late August in the morning which sound similar to a metal door swinging very slowly back and forth on its hinges by the wind.

what are these insects called ?

and what are their life cycles, when do they stop this calling, and why exactly do they do this at this time of year as opposed to earlier?

Thanks for your answers!

  1. the giant rake nosed ziprath from the planet Trypton

  2. If you have Blue Jays around it is probably them. I have heard this sound before I tried to find a link with the call they have so many.

Here is the best description I could find.

One of the most distinctive calls of this type is often referred to as the "rusty pump" owing to its squeaky resemblance to the sound of an old hand-operated water pump. The Blue Jay (and other corvids) are distinct from all other songbirds for using their call as a birdsong.

  3. Crickets? Cicadas?

  4. I have an iron door (or steel fire door) on my apartment entrance and it is completely silent whether I open it slowly or quickly.

So I could not tell you what bird or insect makes a completely silent noise.

Do you have a better description of the noise?

  5. FROGS!!!  or toads maybe?

  6. i don't have an iron door to hand to check, but it might be a cricket?
