Computer modems were developed from modems used by telephone companies for their data transfer services for business customers usually on leased or private lines from the about 1968 to the 1995 era. The technology origin is the Monsieur Baudot 5-position code used from the late 1800 era to today being re-implemented in electrical and electronic operated devices improved over many years. The Baudot code was used for punched paper tape in early applications and the codes used in modems conforming to ITU [CCITT] standards are the 5 binary digit codes with usually 1 start bit 1 stop bit and 1 parity bit and that gives us the 8 bit codes in use today.
