  1. The lattice energy is the energy needed to break apart the solid into its component atoms in the gas phase.  Technically, the lattice energy is the energy that is released as the gaseous ions combine to form the solid product.  

    When a soluble network solid dissolves in water it is because the action of the water molecules  (attracting the particles and then moving way with them) overcomes the energy that holds the solid together.

    Therefore a substance with a low lattice energy will be easier to dissolve in water.
