Dont really know much about bikes. But foudn some trek 4300 and trek 3700 on craigslist and want to start biking from place to place. I was just wondering what would be a better bike overall to use no the road.

  1. The Trek 4300 does not have disk brakes, but has better components overall, and is a much better bike. If they both fit, and cost the same, the 4300 wins hands down. I'd look at getting either a flat-bar road bike, or a road bike meant for commuting as an ideal. At the very least put some slick tires on the mountain bikes to let them roll better.

  2. Neither.  For commuting if you want to stick with  Trek-get a 520.

  3. Mountain bikes aren't mean for commuting, so I concur with the suggestion to go with either the Portland,  or look at the FX series if you prefer the flat-bar mountain style bike.  The FX has braze-ons for panniers and is a solid bike (I have the 7.3).

  4. Probably the 4300 because its has disc brakes and that's what you need when biking with traffic. But those are both moutain bikes, try the trek Portland.
