Which is a better new marine motor, Volvo or Mercruiser?

i have had both with out drive units. the mercruiser is by far the least troublesome. performance is equal.

I am assuming you are talking about Gas not Diesel versions... Both have there ups and downs.  I think all in all Volvo could be the better motor - they have amazingly smooth transmissions, and all in all are just great quality motors.  Mercruisers are less expensive, and still great motors plus they are American - so you will have a much better time finding parts and repairs will definitely be less.  Look at it as a Chevy to a BMW - engine wise they are both great, the BMW might be a little smoother - but it will cost more to maintain and be harder to find parts for, whereas the Chevy will last forever, might not be as smooth, but cheaper to repair and easy to find parts..

You dont mention if you are referring to petrol or diesel.

If diesel, my preference would definitely be volvo.

Mercruiser is better cause the parts are cheaper and more readily available in the aftermarket.
