I'm going to get a hamster soon, but I can't choose between the Campbell Russian and the Winter White Dwarf Hamsters. I know there isn't much difference, but it would help me if you could give me any information between the two.

  1. Campbell Russian Hamster.

  2. winter white, they have a better temper. Campells tend to bite a lot while winter whites definitely not as much.

  3. they are both very similar to each other.  the only difference is that the campbell tend to get fatter than the russian hamsters!

  4. Hi!

I have 2 winter white dwarf Russian hamsters and I recommend them to everyone.

-winter white hamsters sleep less than other breeds and you can play with them more -till the hamsters tuck you in =D

-winter whites nip very rarely comparing to the Campbell hamsters which have a reputation for nipping. They are not recommended if you have small children. And they aren't recommend neither if you are a scardy cat like me an are afraid of biting.

-Campbell's dwarf hamsters do live together as pairs in the wild, but in captivity they often fight and same s*x-pairs or groups get along only rarely while winter whites get along very well as a couple

-You know why winter whites are called so because in the winter they change their color and become white. They are very very cute.

I hope you make the right choice and buy the hamster that fits you best.

Good luck and a hammy day !

  5. Campbells have way more variety in colors. And contrary to popular belief, they can be extremely tame. I have seen small children (2 and 3) handle Campbells hamsters at a local Pet City. It depends on how often they are handled by humans.

In general though, Winter Whites are tamer by default. A feral Winter white is a lot less likely to bite. And they have the added novelty of changing color; if exposed to 16 hours or more of darkness per day, they will gradually turn white. But there are really only four colors of Winter Whites. Winter whites also have larger eyes which gives them a disney-esque appearance.

Campbells and Winter Whites are technically separate species, but are close enough genetically to breed. People in the "Hamster community" (which includes breeders) really frown on this though, and Hybrids can have defects. Because of the size differences in their heads, a female winter white can die trying to give birth to hybrid offspring.

Be aware that a lot of hamsters sold in pet stores that are labelled Campells or Winter White are actually hybrids. Because they can look so much alike, they can even be completely mislabelled. If you want to be 100% sure you are getting a pure specimen, you'll have to locate a breeder.

Personally, I like Winter Whites more. If you have to choose between the two, get a Winter White. I have 4 of them and they are great pets.

  6. Both are equally cute and great to have as pet hamsters. However as litter mates (if you plan to have more than one of the same s*x), Campbells seem to get along better compared to winter whites (I have seen this only from my experience, it has not been proved scientifically).

Otherwise they are so similar it is hard to tell the difference between the two. And this you should keep in mind when buying from pet shops since pet shops tend to make the same mistake in differentiating Campbells from winterwhites and tend to sell them wrongly.

Read up on the following link how to differentiate them so that you can be sure you are buying the correct type from the pet shop -
