  1. Breeders.

No pet shops. Pet shops take the rats from Rat Mills and if you look at the conditions there it's absolutely terrible. Like a Dog Mill, which many people have knowledge of.

  2. Will this be your first rat? If so, I would recommend searching for a local breeder. This way, you have a well socialized youngster with optimal health & temperament in the genetics.

Not saying that pet store & shelter rats aren't wonderful, but there are some that will be prone to illness, and may have some behavioral issues that need an experienced owner.

P.S. Do not just get one. Rats do better in pairs/groups.

There's no reason to house a rat alone!

Edit: Petco/PetSmart vs. small pet shops really depends on the individual stores. Near me, Petco is the best pet store to purchase rats from. The small pet shop is the worst. This may be completely different than where you are.

  3. No, you should get one from the local animal shelter or Humane Society. There are lots of rats in shelters, almost like rabbits.
