Which is a faster internet connection...cable or Verizon Fios???

The only advantage you will get with fios is on the upload.  Your upload times will be much faster.  Download times should be about the same if you buy the $50 service.  If you buy the more premium service, you will fly by cable internet users.  

I currently have cable and I average 500kb for upload and 8Mbit for download.

Simply put, Verizon FIOS will always be faster than cable for the fact that with cable you are sharing your coaxial cable signal with just about everybody in your town.  The way it works is that the coax line leaves your home and goes into a junction box where everybody in your neighborhood goes.  These copper cables are then twisted in with the lines from the next neighborhood.  From there those lines go into another cross connect box with lines coming in from other areas before going back to the distribution station.

With Verizon FIOS you have your own FIBER line from your home to the central office.  Once in the CO you have your own feed from the server to your home.  NO sharing.  If you have experienced "slow down" at specific times (usually right after work, dinner, or evening) that is because this is when most people go on-line, that is the result of "signal sharing"  The other reason is that the glass fiber line can transport more info at a higher rate of speed that any copper line can.

All other things being equal, FIOS is going to be faster.  

I've had both and current use FIOS.  It is about 4 times faster than the current cable offering availible.

Well it really depends on the area you are in as verizon might not have service for fios everywhere. But technically if the cable is running to your house all the way with fiber optic it should be faster. Cable I get around 6mb download.

well some cable companies do also have a fiber optic network, so it really depends what are the companies we talking about.
