  1. define beginner. have you surfed at all before. if no, this is wat i did. take lessons first, they will start you on a semi-foam mal either 9 or 10 foot. they are good to start on because they are easy to paddle and are big and thick enough for you to learn to balance and what not. i then wen down to a 7'3 which i borrowed off my uncle (and still have since he is lazy) it is still reasonably thick, maybe 2inches or so, thus it was good coz it wasnt a huge step down from the mals, when i was confident i was a decent surfer (starting to do cut backs and charge bigger waves) i BOUGHT my own board, a 6'4 no where near as thick as the 7'3 but not really skinny (skinny boards allow for sharper turns but are for more experienced surfers).

my advice:  dont buy a board unless you can surf reasonably well (because you will want a shorter board wen you get better but you will need a bigger one to start)

also dont worry about brand names like billabong or roxy etc, the best thing to do is go to a local shaper and say look, i have been surfing this long, i am this good, im this tall this heavy and i have this much to spend
