I have had a Kirby, a Kenmore and an Oreck in the past.  The Dyson is better than all of them by far.

Easy--Just vacuum your carpet, all day if you want to, with any or all vacuum you are considering.  Then call the Kirby man for a demo.  You can even get some good prices on ebay and classifieds.

I'm quite happy with my Bissells.  I have one of their mid-priced models, one of their carpet cleaning extraction machines and one of their cheap sweepers.  All do their job quite well!  Better than the Hoover I had before!!!!

I like the Orecks. All vacuums pretty much do the job for me, I like Orecks because they're light-weight and I have a lot of stairs.

I love my Oreck.  It is also very light to carry around.  It also works well on carpet, tile and hardwood.  +++
