Is a more common reason social or maturity issues, or is it academic issues? By academic issues, in certain districts(like the one in my town) it would only be limited to difficulty learning the alphabet or counting, etc. because they don't have an academically oriented kindergarten.

  1. generally it is social/maturity. Academically they can pick it up as they get a little older. But immaturity effects them socially which in turn makes them unhappy which then effects learning

In Australian Kindergartens they do not work so much on learning. More about developing social skills and fine and gross motor skills

  2. its about theyre academic abilities

  3. It's mostly social and maturity issues rather then academic at that young of an age.

  4. Ostensibly educators hold children back from first grade because the child is unready either academically, emotionally or both. I also believe that poor behavior is a major reason but that is generally identified as a maturity issue when explained to parents. Often kid who were not well prepared for Kindergarten and don't get a lot of discipline at home wind up in the Transitional First Grade class.

  5. Some schools don't promote due to emotional maturity.  Some go according to academics/learning disabilities and some go by both.
