In the US public school Kindergarten is free unless the school has supply and book fees (many in smaller VA communities still do).  These fees are usually only 20 dollars or less.  You can also send your child to private Kindergarten which does charge you monthly fees, supply fees, and book fees.  It can be expensive but I think it is well worth (it if the family can afford it.)  Talk to the school you are interested in and they can tell you all about the fees they have.  If they are a good school they will be more than happy to discuss this with you.
