  1. i think tablet pc is just a gadget. it cost more for nothing. go with a regular laptop. just depending on what u want to do, u can buy any one. but if it's just like me, surfing internet, and do some word or excel task. u can buy any between 600 to 900. i  dont' really think that u will see any difference between them. i just about mine for 900 and my friend just bought his for 700, it 's almost the same. not big diffence if u just do normal stuff.

  2. I have to disagree with Ediway.  I've been a TabletPC user for about 5 years now and would NEVER go back to a regular laptop.

A convertible TabletPC gives you everything you'd get with a laptop, plus all the extra features of a TPC.  Hey, if all you do is sit at a desk maybe a laptop is good, but if you're truly mobile you can do so much more with a TPC.  It's pretty tough to type while walking, but writing is a breeze.

If you get a TPC with Vista it has trainable hand-writing recognition and is surprisingly accurate.  Even on XP hand-writing recognition is very, very good.

Probably the best places to learn about TabletPC's are these 2 on-line forums:

As for being a student, a TabletPC is a great choice.  Most students need to be able to take notes, highlight items, create drawings, use mathematical formulae, etc. With the correct programs a TPC is much better suited for this than a laptop.

If you go with the TabletPC look at these 2 apps as they are excellent for note taking:

    Microsoft OneNote:

It's not free, but student discounts make it quite inexpensive.

    Microsoft Research Inkseine (beta)

This is a free app from MS's Research division. It's not quite as good at setting up a "notebook" style folder system, but has some excellent features since it is built for TPC's exclusively.
