Which is best for a pet Gerbil or Hamster

I had decided on getting my sons a gerbil as I have had a Hamster before and found him unsocial. I am now having doubts as to which animal would be best please help WHAT WOULD YOU GET?

Gerbil.  I've had both.  Hamsters tend to be nocturnal.  Mine would bite me if I woke her up, too.  The gerbils I had were always ready to play.  They are also cleaner, being desert animals they don't pee much.  Gerbils are very active and that's usually good, but it makes them more likely to get loose.

Do your research before buying either one.
