Which is best for a pet a macaw or african gray?

Question

originally i was going to get an african gray but i have been seeing some macaws which are affordable so im not sure which one would be best

i am looking for a parrot who is a good learner and good temperament and good talker

I prefer african greys, they're better talkers. And macaws aren't really a bird for a novice.

African grays are generally more talkative, but my blue and gold macaws are awesome entertainment. If you are just going to get one bird, make sure you have the time to devote attention to it and talk to it every day. I can hold my birds and we play silly games. They could bite me and really do some damage but haven't yet. They are about 8 years old. They can live to be 70! There are plenty of blogs out there with people discussing problems they are having with the different species. Go there and see what is happening in people's lives as they try to include birds in their families.

Look on the internet and buy some books and really study up on each species and make sure that you have enough room, money and time for such a demanding bird as a grey or macaw.

Do not choose a pet based on talking ability. African Greys are the more reputable talkers. However it is not uncommon for a macaw to out talk certain african greys or even to buy a bird that never utters a word.

Both can be very tempermental (and moody), and both can learn really well.  The only downside to most macaws is their size (unless you get a mini-macaw, which is around the same size as a grey). But if you have the space, go for it.  

*I would just warn you about the beaks on macaws to, very dangerous :P

** If this is your first bird, i would double check that you know the time, effort and commitment they need. They are both just like 2 or 3 year old children and need as much caring form love and attention.

Macaws are beautiful but African Greys are excellent talkers.   I 'd go for the grey.

I found after owning parrots and many other kinds of birds that the best talkers are african greys, budgies and magpies!

Maccaws & budgies mimic but african greys and magpies seem to be able to actually learn making them my favorites!
