  1. I use XP and ubuntu on my computer. I love ubuntu because I get a sense of security knowing that there are only a handful of viruses for linux, and if the proper measures are taken (updating), you don't even need a virus scanner, ya its that safe. I installed it about a week ago, and I customized it to look like XP as everyone in my family is comfortable with XP. But I also love XP as it has been the first OS that I used and that there are thousands of softwares out there for windows.

  2. hi

Linux is best . and in future, it  will rule the world.

windows sucks your money but user friendly.

  3. I am personally a Linux bigot.

But which is better depends on your needs. Linux is an exceptionally powerful OS with a LOT of free software available for it. It can be point and click like Windows, but a user gets the most out of it when s/he learns the command line.

As a professional programmer, I also find it a much better environment to program in and program for. The number of development tools is enormous. If you have any interest in learning to program a computer, Linux would be a good option.

For a desktop OS, I also find Linux very useful. You have a choice of several desktops (I'm partial to KDE) and it has a number of programs like OpenOffice for writing papers and spreadsheets, Firefox for browsing, a number of email clients available and a fantastic music player called Amarok (kind of like iTunes).

However there are some caveats. Because codecs like mp3 and wma are proprietary, you have to download extra software that does not come with the free installation distribution. The process is easy enough, especially if you use a distro like OpenSUSE or one of the Ubuntus. Someone new to Linux might find it hard to figure out at first, but there is plenty of help online.

Also, in order to play dvds, you also have to download a package called libdvdcss to decode them. The software is technically illegal in the US because it breaks encryption (thanks,  DMCA), but it is easily available and widely used. There might be a commercial dvd player available however.

The one thing that is bad i that there are some things that will not work on Linux. Active X controls through your browser will not work, though from a security standpoint, that's not a bad thing. And most commercial games do not have a Linux port. But some do. Quake, Enemy Territory, etc do have Linux ports. I think the download is free, but you need the game CD to play it.

Linux has a steep learning curve, but the payoff is better tools, better security, better performance and better productivity.

  4. WINDOWS!! Many programs require you to have windows so without you wouldn't be able to use many programs if you had lynix
