Question:

Which is better, 2 MB or 5 MB for cameras?

I have a Leica D-lux 3 and I've always used the default size that they set it to - 5 mb. (it might be 5.5 mb, I don't remember.)

However, the size is much too large (it comes out more than 2000 pixels for one side) and the next option is to make the pictures 2 mb.

What is the approximate size of 2 mb and does it come out better than 5 mb in quality?

  1. No, it's not better in quality, quite the opposite! To get from a 5.5MB file size down to 2MB, you either have to have a lower resolution (fewer pixels), or compress it more. Either way, it means LESS detail.

However, if you have no need for the highest resolution and find that a lower one would be fine for your needs, then go ahead.

It's worth bearing in mind, though, that you can create a smaller sized copy of the picture using software (such as Photoshop or Gimp) once you've transferred it to your computer, which at least gives you the option of going back to the larger file size if you need to (for example, if you decide to get a large-sized print made from it).

  2. 5 MB is definitely better.  If you're resizing them in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, change your "pixels per inch" setting to something higher.  It is probably set at the default web setting of 72 ppi.  Changing it to 300 ppi will mean those 2000 pixels will be spread over less than 7 inches instead of spread over nearly 30 inches at 72 ppi.  300 ppi will also look MUCH sharper than 72 ppi if you print the pictures.  You should be able to change the default in your editing software so that it defaults to 300 ppi (or whatever you choose) rather than 72 ppi, as well.

  3. The larger the file, the more detail will be in it ... so the 5.5 mb file will be the best.  Always shoot at your cameras highest resolution .. you never know which one will be the one you want to enlarge to a 36 x 48 inch print.

After you have downloaded your images, do a quick edit (sort) and pick out the ones you want to send via email and resize only them ... and save them as a different file name so you do NOT overwrite your original
