While I would opt for democratic communism I think the idea of democracy would be corrupted my narrowly limiting acceptable political debate to rival socialist parties, much as the current limiting to rival free-market parties is a disaster. Instead of inheriting the repressive state infrastructure of 'democratic' capitalism, a revolutionary goal would surely be to bring about a participatory democratic system, freeing people from elite domination and decision making. Once an effective communal politics and economics has been established it seems unlikely that capitalism would ever gain domination over society again.
