  1. I like a one-story house because I hate going up and down stairs all day, and I like having everything handy. But I live alone, so privacy isn't an issue, and I don't need a big house. For a family, 2 story would be better.

  2. there are all good advices above, so you might have some ideas that suit yourself. Just another one thing for the 2 floor is downstair is cooler than upstair. I have experience in both living in 1 floor and 2 floor and they both have pros and cons.

    Good luck with your choice

  3. A single floor house is easier to get around, because you don't have the stairs to contend with. It's also safer, particularly for small children, because they don't have stairs to fall down. And, when you get older and those hips and knees start to go, you'll wish you had a one-story house. A two story house is also harder to heat and cool, since the heat will rise to the top of the 2nd floor ceiling, while cold air sinks to the bottom of the first floor. There's also generally more air volume per square feet for a 2 story house (more air to heat and cool).

However, a two story house increases the square footage of living space for the same square footage of land used. You can also usually get a better view by being in a two-story house. Also, you will get more exercise going up and down the stairs. And, two story houses usually include at least the area over the stairs where you have vaulted (2-story-high) ceilings, which can make for a more dramatic design. And, it's nice to have a loft or master bedroom retreat where you can get away from the rest of the fam (particularly the kids) when you want to.

  4. i prefer single storey - hated going up and down stairs with the vacuum etc, doing the clothes and linen washing (clean up, dirty down) the worry of the kids when they were younger  falling down them, heat was sucked upstairs leaving downstairs freezing in winter, upstairs unbearable in summer

  5. There are several pros and cons to building one or two stories. From cost to personal preference and lifestyle, there are many things that will influence your decision one way or the other. Having recently built a house, choosing one or two stories we put a lot of thought into. The link below suggests a few things to think about before you decide including cost/building budget.

  6. It depends on your age and condition. A previous responder was correct that when your older a single floor is best even if your not disabled.

A single story house has higher maintenance costs than a multi story house of the same size (heating and cooling cost, larger roof etc).

Personally I hated a two story house. Hauling laundry up and down the stairs, the vacuum etc, etc.

Obviously a single story house requires a larger lot. If your moving to an area with high land cost, a multi story house will give greater value.

  7. I would choose a single story.. It's more practical as opposed to a 2 story home.

Think of the cost of heating and cooling too, having two stories to heat/cool. Gonna cost more.

  8. that is just personal preference. I have a two story because I have 2 teen boys and wanted them to have the upstairs. It is just better for us. It really just depends what you are using the space for and what you prefer

  9. Two storied houses seem to have the most character, esp. the older homes.  However, if a family member becomes unable to negociate stairs, a problem exists.

  10. A single floor could be best if you plan to live out your life in it because you may find yourself disabled at some point in your life.

  11. I live in a 2 story with only one zoned unit. We just spent $2500 to get some kind of adjustments made. Warm air rises and cold air sinks so it could be a much cheaper option as mentioned before to go to a one story.
