I'm on the track to becoming a special education teacher, and I wanted to know which is more desirable/hirable, a Masters of Arts in Special Education, or a Master of Education in Special Education?

  1. Strongly enough I am in the processing of finishing my M Ed this semester. But to answer your question, they are basically the same degree. The only difference is in how the department of special education is set up. By this I mean is the Department of Special Education eligible to award their own degrees. If so then it would be a M.A. in Special Education. However if the College of Education s the awarding department then you would be getting a M. Ed which has a specialization attached to it.

If you are planning to teach special education then I would encourage you to get you credential(s) first and teach for a couple of years, After getting tenured in a district that you like working for , then go back for the master degree.  Doing it this way makes you are cheaper for the school district to hire with no contracted teaching experience.
