  1. It is pretty much a question of personal taste and needs, but remember that a sailboat normally has a motor too, so you can say that a sailing boat has two engines as a matter of fact: sail+engine, if your motor ever breaks and you are in a hurry you still can rely on your sails to get out of trouble (and viceversa when there is no wind)

  2. Boils down to personal preference.

If the ice ever goes out here in Minnesota we will do both.

  3. i believe that a sail boat is much better because it doesn't pollute the air as much as a motor boat. but a motor boat gives you a little more freedom to do stuff. i prefer a motor boat though.

  4. I get this question all the time.  I also have had and enjoyed both.  The big question is just what do you want to use the boat for, and where?  Plus... where do you want to go? What do you want to do with it?  Who, and how many people will you probably have with you?  Spouse? Kids?

Sailing has it advantages... fun, quite, and s**y... With the right sail boat, you can go just about anywhere in the world you want to go on a minimal budget.

Power however also has its advantages... Safer for kids on board... quick, easy...

To get a good answer on this one, you need to give more details... other than that, its like asking someone else if you are going to like chocolate or vanilla ice cream the best.

  5. Sails are better for sailing, a motor is better for motoring.

We often motor in our sailboat if there is not enough wind ... but when the wind is up ... the motor is down and the sails are up.  You can take a 38 ft sailboat across the ocean ... a 38 ft power boat can't make the trip. It all depends on your preference, location and goals for boating ... whichever you prefer .... GO BOATING !!!

  6. Buy a boat that you can do both in. Sailing is much quieter and motoring is much faster, therefore when there is not much wind to sail in, we start up our diesel engines and start motoring.

  7. Each has it's own merits. to sail well you are not using any fuel but it costs a lot to have good sails made to suit the boat and make it efficient. Yet with a "motor yacht" with a well designed hull you may have a boat costing the same to run as having a set of sails made every 2-3 years. Depends on what you want, either way you need some sort of power and it all comes down to the owners choice and beliefs. Pretty much boats are a hole in the water that you throw money in no matter if they are "power" or "sail"

  8. Depends on what you want and can afford.

Sailboats are less spacious, but far more affordable to operate.

When at sea in a motorboat your money is steadily being spent.

Fuel is not going to get any cheaper... not at all.

Personally, as a function before fashion kind of guy, I would take a sailboat any day over a motorboat.

  9. WHAT ARE TRYING TO DO?? START AN ONLINE WAR??

Seriously, I'm a sailor and I love sailing...it's quiet and very inexpensive...but if you have young kids, a motor boat will probably be way more entertaining w/ tubing etc.

Try both! Go to your local sailing club and ask to crew for a day, then rent a powerboat and decide for yourself.
