  1. I prefer SAG


  2. It's not a contest.  Each union covers a different type of work.  Traditionally SAG covers acting on film, including movies and filmed television, AFTRA covers audio and video tape and live broadcast work, and EQUITY covers acting live on stage.  

  3. Not only what your first answerer said, but being a member of one, qualifies you to join the others, simply by paying the fee and dues, expensive, but for a pro, needed.
