Which is better Emigrant Direct or ING Direct for a online savings account?

Why not deal with a local institution like a credit union? they may not have the top savings rates but can be handy, friendly, and secure. Most have CD and money market accounts.

HSBC Direct is the best! The highest rate and really easy to use. No fees, no min, etc.

Check the rates, both are pretty competitive but low right now, at about 3.00% APY. Less than 2 years ago, both had rates in the fives. My advice would be to put your money in a conventional savings account for now and wait until the rates rebound.

You can seemingly earn at least 3 or above in a regular money market and without all the hassle of an online savings account. However, when the rates get back up in the fives I would move the money over there.

I have ING and love it. You can try HSBC direct.

If I had to choose between just those two I would pick ING Direct simply because they are a much more well-known bank.

However, they are both FDIC insured so you shouldn't worry to much about either one.
