Question:

Which is better Enfamil AR or Similac RS?

I am currently only breastfeeding my daughter, but she has been having a lot of problems with excessive spitting up. I asked her pediatrician about it and he said she may benefit from supplementing with some formula in her diet. He told me to try the formula that helps to control spit up, but I forgot to ask which one. I bought the emfamil to try, but thought I would get a little advice before I opened it since formula is so expensive. My daughter is two months old today and she has had this problem since she was two weeks old. At first she was gaining weight fine, but when she was weighed today she was 9lbs3, and three weeks ago she was 9 lbs 6. Any information would be great.

  1. Enfamil AR  worked wounders also my son has reflux and is on zantac

  2. I tried both and they are about the same. The only thing is - Similac RS only comse in liquid form, so you can't buy the powder. I'm not sure if you are buying pre-mix or powder anyway, but just keep that in mind.

I don't breastfeed, but those who do may have ideas - like the few people that say you may want to change your diet a little.  I sort of wish I had that option because my baby spits up excessively too and no formula has really helped her.

    Good luck!

  3. I would not give formula either. I had a similar problem with my son and here is what I did:

Stop eating Dairy, eggs, soy and beef for 2 weeks. See if it gets better. (my son was completely better).

Then try reintroducing these items. Try dairy one week and see how your daughter reacts, then try eggs the next week.

You will be able to tell which one is bothering her. When I eat dairy or beef my son starts spitting up like crazy, and when I don't eat it he is perfectly fine.

Trust me this is probably the problem, it is just an allergy to the proteins in that particular food, and they do grow out of it.

My dr. said it was nothing, but then when I tried this and told her what happened she said "oh he must be having an allergy"

  4. Whoa there!  I am beyond confused.  I cant believe your ped would tell you to supplement with formula if you don't need to.  That is bunk!  She might have reflux.  Breast milk is by FAR more digestible than any formula.  Maybe you can pump breastmilk and add cereal to the bottle.  I know she is young but if she needs to gain weight that might be an option.  But don't give her formula unless you have to.  I don't know how you feel about your ped but I would get a second opinion.

I should have mentioned my son was breastfed and spit up and cried a lot and it was reflux.  He started zantac and mylanta and was instantly better.  I have nothing against moms who formula feed but if you are successfully breastfeeding and your doctor doesn't support you then that is a sign to get a new doctor.

  5. My son had excessive spitting up when he was 2 weeks old. My doctor told me to add rice cereal to the breast-milk and Reglan and it stopped. Now (at 7 months old), I had to stop breastfeeding, due to my medication for seizures, and he is on Emfamil AR.

Plus I think eating solid foods has helped him a whole lot. He has stopped spitting up and is off the Reglan.

But, don't start solids yet your daughter is still too young.

    Good Luck :)
