I am debating between a 42" rca 1080P hdtv and an olevia 42" 1080p hdtv. What are your opinions on these two brands? The rca is $924 and the olevia is $829.

Thanks, debbie

  1. Contrary to what the previous poster said...you'll see an INCREDIBLE difference between a Sony (which is a very high end brand) and Olevia/RCA (Low-end brand). The fact that they're both HDTVs DOES NOT mean the high definition picture will look the same. Sony Bravia XBR lcd tvs are concidered to be one of the best in the industry. a 40" will roughly cost you $2500, while that RCA is $1000. Not only is the picture quality different, but the BUILD quality is very different. RCA and Olevia use very BASIC generic parts to put their sets together. While brands like Sony, Sharp, Samsung use very high end parts that make their sets look amazing. In the TV industry...you get what you pay for, but don't take my word for it. Wal*mart (and I"m guessing these sets are at wal*mart because typically they're the only places that sell RCA LCDs) are notorious for marketing "get the same HDTVs here for less!". Fact is, they sell OLDER outdated models, with VERY VERY LOW specifications, so it's balony. You will not see any of the tvs they carry at any other major electronics chain like Best Buy, Circuit city or Fry's Electronics. See for yourself, go look at a Sony XBR4 BRAVIA LCD at one of these stores, and then look at the RCA. You'll notice a difference right away. Also, with better known brands, you get much better reputable customer service and warranty services. If all you can get is a $1000 tv, then get what you can afford, but at the same time don't expect to get Mercedez-Benz quality, and pay a Hyundai price.

  2. According to a Consumer Reports segment I recently saw on the local news, there isn't really a difference between the quality of picture of a big name brand(like Sony or Lg) and a more generic name .The big difference is only in the price.Since it's all HD,who cares what the brand is.Either way you get a warranty which you can pay more to get extended.I would just compare the price, features, and style(look )of the sets and pick the one that fits you.

  3. They are both low end bands but the Olevia I believe is better.
