  1. Honestly, the 450D, if you can afford it.  It goes for $800 right now, but is above the 400D and the Nikon 40D.  If you can not afford it, go with the 1000D, or the Canon XS.  Its new as well, has Live View, Digic III, and 10 MP and you can get it with the kit lens (which has Image Stabalizer) for $699.  That is the best deal for entry level DSLR's!!!  I have the Canon XTi and love it, they have that for $600, just doesnt have live view, no IS for the kit lens, and uses Digic II processor!

  2. I'd recommend the 400D(rebel XTi) mostly because of price. Because of the introduction of the 450D and 1000D, the prices on 400D's had dropped significantly. Between the three, there aren't a whole lot of things that would give one a big advantage over the other(except the 450D's 2MP advantage possibly), mostly because they are all competing in the same class of camera (entry level dSLR). Personally, I think it would be more worth your while to consider other brands, namely Olympus. I purchased an Olympus evolt 510 and the 14-42mm kit lens from Cameta Camera about 2 months ago .It has all the features of the cameras you listed and then some (like in body stabilization, Live view, etc.etc.etc.) and it only cost me $411. You almost never find a Canon 400/450D or Nikon D40x with lens for anywhere near that price (except maybe a not so intelligent eBay seller).

Anyway, out of your choices, I'd go for the 400D first, because it's cheaper, and you're starting off new so it would be a good way to teach you the ropes of an SLR, and you can take the $$$ you saved and buy a good lens (most of the kits lenses are pretty c**p, no matter what manufacturer you got to).

    Hope this helps!

  3. Don't get a D40x get a D60 because it's a lot newer and more kinks worked out of it. Nikon and Canon are very close competitors so go for which one you like more. Also, the Canon Xsi is much bigger than the Xti. On the other hand, Nikons are all pretty much the same. Hope this helps!!

  4. All the DLSRs are good enough as far as entry level photography is concerned. Photo quality will be more or less same in all these 3 cameras. I would suggest to go for either of Nikon D40x or Canon 400D and invest money in some good lenses. Canon 450D being recent will be more expensive than the rest I guess.

I personally use Nikon D40x and have got very good results till now.

You can do some extra research at www.dpreview.com. This is where I went before buying the Nikon.
