  1. It depends on what you're trying to do.

All things being equal- a quad core would be better.

If you want to do lots and lots of multi-tasking, Quad is the way to go.

If you want to be a gamer, Most games don't make use of multi-core technology yet, and dual cores usually have some faster specs like FSB (front side bus) on the CPU. That can translate to faster/smoother game play.

A 2.0ghz dual core might have a faster FSB than a 2.0 quad core. If you have a 3.4ghz quad core, that's obviously a higher frequency and just might have a higher FSB than the 2.0 dual core.

You may not need quad core yet, but if you can afford it, it might be the way to go to keep your computer from getting outdated too fast as computers do these days. If you're a serious gamer, you may want to do more research on the subject and stick with dual core.

  2. pending on what applications you going to run, if you going to make use of quad core applications then go quad core otherwise go dual core

  3. Quad-Core means there are 4 processing cores in the processor. Kind of like a 4-cylinder engine.

Core-Duo or Core 2-Duo (64-bit version of the same chip) means there are 2 processing cores in the processor. A 2-cylinder engine.

Its like having 4 guys do the same work 2 guys would do. The team of 4 guys will finish in half the time it takes the team of 2 to perform the same task (in theory).

All in all, Quad-Core is better and faster.

  4. quad. it works better for converting music, vids, etc. beyond that most games won't show a huge improvement over a core 2 duo with similar stats.

    they do a test here:

  5. Both are fine CPU architectures from Intel or AMD processors.

Unfortunately, few programs are written in such a way that the tasks can be divided over 4 cores.

If you know what you will be using the computer for, go to xtremetech or a similar site that runs benchmarks. If you run PhotoShop, you can find benchmark tests that compare performance of a 2-core and 4-core CPU.
