I have a 12 year old Tempstar unit that just went out. I really liked it, but I want to know if I should stick with the tried and true, or go with a Trane system. Anyone?

  1. Try consumer reports. Personally though, I believe stick what you're used to and works well.

  2. In the end, it's going to be the quality of the installing company that will determine which is better.  You can have a c**p crew install a high end Trane and make it perform like c**p, and you can have fantastic crew install a low-end Goodman or Payne unit and make it work great.

Make sure you compare apples to apples... don't compare one model's contractor (low end) grade to the competitor's high end grade.  The high end stuff of each brand is better built, better warrantied, and made with better materials.

I personally like Trane and that's what I had installed in my home.  To be honest, I didn't look at the Thermostar line of equipment.

  3. I got so tickled...

A family member, who owns his own heating and air conditioning company, sold Trane as his main brand.  While up at his cabin for a nice long weekend, I found that he had a Carrier unit.  When I asked him about this, he commented that they are all basically the same, just a different name.

  4. You are buying a name. I have worked on and sold and installed them all. Yes the higher priced ones have more steel in the cabinets and look better, but as long as you have a Copeland scroll compressor you have the best compressor made and they all use the same replacement parts.Check out Goodman, they have a 5 year parts and labor warranty and on their high end the warranty is 10 years. 95% of the parts are universal. Look inside your old unit at the contactors and relays, they are all made in Japan or china, I know I have been doing this for 15 plus years and am licensed and certified with a BA in thermodynamics.

  5. Trane is better.

  6. Ones as good as another if it is taken care of.Trane is o.k.but way overpriced. So is Carrier and Lennox.Goodman is bargain priced.Try a Rheem/Ruud.

I've installed and worked on all of them.I own a Rheem.

  7. I am sold on my Trane heat pump.  It ran for 15 trouble-free yrs. before replacement.

Their motto is "It's hard to stop a Trane."
