Question:

Which is better? When disposing of non-recyclable plastic like bread-bags, should you burn it or toss it out?

I recycle everything I can, like the plastic grocery bags, and milk jugs and detergent plastics.

But, I do not know what the best alternative is for disposing of other items like the wrappings on food, and household products, and other store bought goods.

We do have the option of burning outside in our area. I hope to get a good suggestion or option to get rid of these type of plastics the best, and most eco-friendly way possible. Thank you!

  1. Never burn plastic because chemicals in the plastic destroys our air. It is better to rip it up then throw it away so animals dont get caight in it.

  2. the best thing is to try not to take them.carry your own bags and use them.

burning plastic is poisonous and polluting.

biodegradable bags still take ages to break down and need conditions like warth and humidity.if they are out in the air they dont break down properly..

some supermarkets accept their used bags back but no garantee they dont just dump them

  3. toss it

  4. reused it

  5. Plastic bags from bread, paper towel and toilet paper packaging can be put with your grocery bags and placed in the grocery store's plastic bag recycling bin.  I even put a shower curtain in there.  Any plastic packaging.

Don't forget that boxes and cardboard of all types can be placed in the paper recycling bin.  We recycle kleenex boxes, toilet paper and paper towel cardboard inner rolls, and all boxes that food comes in.  just break them down to flatten and put in with the newspapers.

  6. I agree w/ Sandra G. We re-use bread bags. They can be used for cookies (the ones where the bags have been torn), used as sandwich bags, etc. Burning the plastics, however, would be bad, as others have said.

  7. Good question!  Thanks, by the way, for recycling and reusing your other bags.  Every little bit helps.

Burning plastic is not a good idea.  It releases harmful toxins into the air much more so than allowing them to degrade.  I am no scientist, but I suspect plastic will break down more quickly if it is holding organic materials, like dog p**p!

We reuse our breadbags to store other things in, such as homemade baked goods, sandwiches, cookies, etc.  We also reuse other bags (such as the ones the newspaper sometimes comes in) as dog p**p bags.  If you have a dog, try this - or donate them to friends who have dogs.

You can also reuse the bread bags as produce bags when you go to the grocery or buy bulk foods.

Save clean plastic bags like that and use them as padding when you ship packages.  Just wad them up and stuff a bunch inside another bag and tie it shut - that way you don't waste money on bubble wrap, etc.

    I hope these ideas help!

  8. What ever you do dont burn it!!!!! It releces toxens into the environment that speed the problem!!!!!! So please no burning!

  9. Just a note - some of those bread bags can be recycled! Check on the bag...I noticed that Wonderbread+ is recycling type '4' and can be put in the blue box (similar to the outside large plastic bag that milk comes in).
