  1. Platinum.

  2. Platinum is better

  3. You get what you pay for.

    White gold is less expensive.

    Platinum wears better.

Both have their pluses and minuses. Go with what you can afford.

  4. Platinum is better but also much more expensive

  5. Platinum is stronger than white gold, but more expensive too...

It all depends on what you are looking for in the ring...

If you are looking to keep costs down, while still having the elegance of the diamond(s) shown off in white metal, then go for the white gold.

If cost is not a problem, then go with the platinum...

Just remember, any coloration (near-colorless G color and lower) will show more in white metal settings... So go for the highest color quality you can afford...

Yellow metal (yellow gold) has the blessing of hiding such imperfections a lot better...

Good luck, and enjoy your ring!

  6. Platinum....but it depends on your price range. Personally my rings are white gold and i love them, but I have only had my engagement ring for a year and have already had to have it "dipped" (which means i had to have while gold put on it again because the yellow gold under it was showing)

You should just go and look at the bands and see the prices and decide from there.

    Good Luck

  7. Just because something is more expensive, does not make it better. The whole engagement ring industry preys on us like little animals.

They tell you more expensive = better. Not necessarily true.

  8. White gold. Platinum is so much costlier to buy and to fix because it's a harder metal so it's harder for the jewelers to work with. They will charge you a lot more to fix a platinum ring than a white gold one. I got mine at Jared's and do not regret it at all. I was nervous to get it from a chain. They have a package where you pay $100-200 when you purchase the ring to have the white gold rhodium plated and cleaned for free for life. Also they replace ANY diamonds that fall out for free. I am very happy with my white gold.

  9. Platinum is the trend right now; trends change.  Ask a jeweler about the differences and decide which metal is right for your life-style.

My children have platinum and white gold, depending on their personal choices and life-style. I DID have white gold, but when we had our 25th, we replaced our rings and I chose gold.  I like gold jewelry with my skin tone more than platinum or white gold.  I wasn't worried about trends because trends come and go and then the previous trend looks dated.  I wanted what looked good on me and what appealed to my vision not someone elses since I woudl be the one looking at them more than anyone else!

(I'm curious..someone posted that platinum is better but it is scratches easily and is more expensive.  If this is so, why is it better?  Also, why have platinum and dip it in white gold?  Not trying to critique someone else's answer- I honestly don't know why and I'm curious.)

**  Thank you Garnet Glitter - excellent information !!

    Good luck with your choice

  10. platinum all the way

  11. I have platinum for engagement and wedding rings. Ive found mine to be hardwearing and after 2 years still have their shine

    Hope this helps xx

  12. White gold. Platinum is the big hype right now, but it scratches so easily.

  13. To answer your question (and doc's)....

There is no such thing as better...it's all personal taste.

Platinum is harder...it does NOT scratch as easy as white gold but it does scratch.....either you have it periodically polished to rub out the minute scratches or you learn to love the patina age & wear gives all beloved jewelry...do NOT expect it to look shiny new because with the years it will not be shiny new....

Platinum is a silvery-gray.....do NOT expect it to be the bright mirror shiny white that fine sterling silver is...only sterling silver...and rhodium are that way.

White gold is an alloy in other words it's a mix of metals.....yellow gold, which BTW is always yellow in it's pre form, and another metal to whiten the mix-usually nickle or palladium......sometimes, especially in older pieces, platinum was used but you need an experienced goldsmith for that. Today, most white gold settings with gemstones are made with palladium as this mix is softer than a gold/nickle mix, easier to work with as far as setting stones, re-sizing, and less likely to cause metal allergies that are common with nickle however.....the resulting gold/palladium mix can have a slight yellow or even brown tinge so to hide that fact, and the fact that all white gold, no matter the mixture, is never whitely mirror bright as sterling or pure rhodium( which cost-wise would be thru the roof) it is plated with a thin veneer of rhodium, which does wear away with time...it is NOT yellow gold plated with white gold, nickle, or rhodium...it is a lesser quality white gold or an off color which has been plated to hide that fact....ALL the name jewelers do it because the demand for white gold settings is so high right now therefore it plumps their profits.

Now white gold alloys made with nickle are silvery-gray and look almost identical to platinum....but there can be metal allergy isues with the nickle and it's a harder alloy to work with.

Then there's gold/platinum white gold alloy.....as my first engagement was, it's a soft silverygray with a subtle shine...not the shiny mirror bright look....but it NEVER yellows....most older pieces were made this way...and they are most beautiful IMO.

It is consistant in it's composition all the way thru.....the metal on the surface is exactly the same as the metal inside...is pink paint red inside? or is it pink thru & thru after you've completely mixed the red in with the white....same thing.

White gold, no matter the metal mix...does NOT turn yellow, nor can it be treated or bleached....the color it is  the color you get...if it's too 'dull' or off color for you, you get/have it plated.

People need to research before they buy...and don;t listen to those sales clerks in jewelry stores...they don;t kow what they are talking about...I had one tell me a praisiolite I was looking at wasn't a prasiolite, it was a green quartz.....she had no idea that the gemstone name for a green quartz IS prasiolite...then she told me white gold turns yellow with time....I gave her a lesson on that one, too.....

So find out the real facts...research...then decide what's best for you.

  14. Technically, platinum is better and costs more.

However, it also takes scratches much easier, and is harder to repair, etc.

    I would recommend white gold.

  15. White gold is a stronger metal than Platinum

  16. Platinum shines forever!!!

  17. It all depends really.

Platnuim was a very popular fad about tweo years ago.  It is a big increase in price but it tends to be a softer material.  the up side is that it springs back more when bent instead of breaking.

To get the best deal buy the while gold ring and have the prongs changed over to platnium is there are any dimonds.

White cold can be refinished every few years if needed as well.

But if you want to spend the money go with platnium

  18. Platinum is awesome, but is MUCH more expensive than anything else.

  19. Mine is platinum, but I had it dipped in white gold because it scratched so easily.  It lost its shine really quick so I would save your money and get white gold.

  20. White gold is better because you can always get it resized, compared to platinum one you size it you can t get it resized unless you get a brand new platinum ring.
