  1. montessori... because chidren learn best through hands-on, exploration and through play.... unlike in traditional with usually pen, paper and books..

    depends also to the school

  2. Public schools have gone downhill in epic proportions in the past 20 years.

If you can afford a Montessori school you will be helping your child to be much brighter and have a much better chance at life -- in addition to the child being much happier.

  3. It really depends on the child and on what you think is important. Montessori materials are wonderful and some of the academic learning is quite advanced .However, little attention is paid to teaching children to work and play well with others and there is little creativity. Materials are to be used in one way and using them in other ways is discouraged. It is probably not a great choice for a child who needs to be physically active and is maybe a little boisterous. Not all Montessori schools are alike. Some combine a Montessori approach with a more traditional one. Not all traditional preschools are alike either. There is a tremendous range in approach and structure. Some are far more creative than others, some more academic. Some follow a preplanned curriculum, some develop curriculum around the children's interests. Your best bet is to visit lots of programs while there are children present and figure out what is the best fit for your child.

  4. I think it depends on the student and even the school.  My niece thrived at Montessori education and did very well.  My son would not have done very well with it and did better with traditional education.

  5. Montessori is more fun and hands on, kids enjoy that more.

  6. Depends...answer my question first.  What's better?  Apples or oranges?

I have taught in both systems and I think Montessori is better.  People who are in my same situation disagree.  Others agree.  I tend to think there are fantastic teachers in every style of education and there are crappy ones.  But I don't think every teacher can be a Montessori Teacher.  I don't think every teacher can be a traditional teacher.

The idea is finding out how you, as a teacher, can best help your students depending on who you are and go with that style.  All ECE Teachers have the overall same goal - instill love of learning, provide the child with skills they need in life and school and skills that help them develop and become independent.  (I could make a much bigger list).  HOW we do that is different.  But a good teacher in his/her environment does it well...no matter which style.

  7. I think a Montessori education is never a good choice. Everyone need limits, boundaries and structure. I think empowering our children is great but everyone needs to learn that there are rules. I use to babysit for a family who's children went to a Montessori school and their kids went rollerblading through my parents house ( when they were there with their parents) and their parents did not say anything to them. When my parents finally said something it was not a good scene. Granted there are many things wrong with a "traditional" education too. Parents need to be involved no matter where you send your child to school.

  8. It really depends upon the child! That may be a shocking answer coming from a Montessori primary teacher in public education, but it's really the only fair answer I can give.  That being said....I love, love, love being a Montessori teacher.

I know that my students have great opportunities to explore and learn things that they might not get from a traditional classroom.  They learn about people and places all over the world and that not everyone lives the way that they do.  My children learn to take care of themselves through practical life and solving their own problems (as best they can).  They do extraordinary things with numbers that might scare older children (later these concrete ideas will become abstract).

So please take into account my experiences in comparison to other answers saying that Montessori stifles creativity and does not allow children to solve problems.  It does just the opposite!  I encourage my children to resolve things without adult intervention if at all possible.  I do not interfere in their exploration of materials, unless they are abusing it or may hurt someone else.

Montessori is a very hands-on approach that provides children the opportunity to learn about things that interest them.  However, we are still responsible for state standards like everyone else.  We just go well beyond these standards quite often.

Montessori is also self-paced meaning that children must be able to choose activites that are right for them.  Not all children are capable of this.  I have had some children who were not ready for this responsibility, which is why I say that it depends upon the child. As Maria herself believed..."Follow the child."

  9. The Montessori method is ALWAYS the best way to educate our children. Traditional schools are HORRIBLE. They don't allow the children to learn together.  Schools that use the Montessori method encourages children to learn together.

The teachers that use the Montessori method ask children how they can play together better.  In traditional schools, the teacher would INTERFERE with the child's development.  For example, when two children are fighting and the teacher would automatically interfere by telling them to stop fighting.  The Montessori method encourages the teacher to ask how they could play better.  How does this stifle creativity? It's teaching children to be more creative and finding ways to SOLVE problems.  Traditional schools stifled creativity, NOT schools that use the Montessori method! Traditional schools feel that children need AUTHORITY, which is why they interfere! Parents who put their children in schools that use the Montessori method feel that children should learn together.  And parents who put their children in traditional schools don't want their children to learn together.  It's that simple.  It doesn't depend on the child or parents.  It depends on what the parents truly believe in.  All children can benefit using the Montessori method.  It's because of their SELFISH parents that they don't get this opportunity.  I can understand that schools that use the Montessori method can be expensive.  But just as long as the parents believe that children should learn together, then I'm happy.  I don't like parents who feel that children should NOT learn together.  It makes me ANGRY because these parents are the ones that make society BAD! Parents need to be advocates for their children.  Children are too young to understand.  Well most of them are.  That's why parents are there to make sure their needs are met.  It makes me upset when parents aren't doing anything to help their child.

The children who use the Montessori method said that they help each other.  The goal of society is to learn to live together.  The Montessori method at least lives up to that expectation unlike traditional schools.  Don't listen to all those people who complain about the Montessori method! All those people are selfish people.  They don't want children to learn together.  That's why they are completely against it!

  10. I worked in a Montessori for 2 weeks and in my opinion as a result of that, Traditional.  There is nothing wrong with organisation.  Montessori was like a funny farm.  Kids running a muk and very peculiar staff members.  That is why I left.

  11. Montessori is a more hands oninteractive classroom environment. The activites are student directed meaning that students learn what interest them, not what they need to know. Concepts such as math me be taught using a diffrent method rather then worksheets and rulers. However, as an ECE educator, I did find the Montessori curriculum to be somewhat of a challenge and less structural for a child. It is great for inquisitive children and some thirve in this type of environment. However, at a traditional school, the is more structure and planning into the concepts learnt. Much less for the techer to do, yet stull very limited. The choice is up to you, or your child.
