  1. I'm with Rigo--get a French Press. You will have the smoothest , best coffee you've ever had. I have a very good one that I got for even less than $30, it cost me about $15.

But, if you insist on getting one of the two that you chose, pick a drip coffee maker. Percolators are too out of style, and horrible coffee comes out of them since you run the water over the grounds again and again. That burns the coffee badly.

  2. Drip coffee maker needs to bring the coffee to a boil to purify it. Then gravity causes it to drip through the coffee to make the actual coffee product. It don't need to maintain that boiling temperature just bring the water there for a period of time and then hold it at some lower ( but hot) temperature.

Perculator action requires the liquid to not only be brought to a boil but maintain that temperature in order to have the perculator action take place. Through this action ( rising to the top) is how the liquid pours down over the basket containing the coffee.

Since it has to maintain this higher temperature, and we are talking about heatloss or more adequately the loss of energy or energy waste. This will be much higher for this coffee maker than it is for a Drip Coffee Maker.

Oh, and I think the taste of your coffee is the result of the coffee blend rather than the method of processing to produce the beverage. I could be wrong here but that is just my take on it.

  3. Personally, i think a french press makes a better coffee. Plus it's non-electrical, and generally cheap and easy to use and clean. Plus you have the benefit of always being able to use whole coffee bean. You just grind the beans, dump em in the press, pour hot water, and let steep for a few minutes, then push the plunger/filter down to the bottom, and pour straight into the cup. The oils get worked up when you strain it through the mesh, so it makes the coffee richer tasting.

I got mine for $30 at bed/bath/beyond; but i've seen em for as little as $12 at Ikea.

  4. make sure you get the best beans for the great tasting coffee - perculatorsadn drip coffe makers both do the same job. I would go for drip - i think it's easier.
