Which is better a slate top pool table or marble , what is the difference in play?

The idea behind using slate or marble (or plywood, for that matter) is simply to make the table as level as possible. None of those materials really has as much to do with the play as the bumpers and table covering.

Different grades of bumpers and different grades of table felt are really the "play factor" keys.

Slate is the way to go. And felt is for arts and crafts not pool tables.
