Which is better a soft top or regular surfboard?

I am interest in surfing but I don't know if I should get a soft top or regular surfboard. Help! Thanx for answering.

i have never owned, learned or bought a soft top board but i have ridden them before i feel they are a little sluggish and doesnt respond as fast but they do forgive you if you fall on them specially the rubber fins just the other day i got desperate to ride some pretty big shore breaks on my epoxy and i landed on my fins and it put a gash on my arm

Soft boards are pretty cheap they can withstand some beatingsbut with a traditional board you will pretty much get dings or maybe crack it the first day you paddle out

a regular  board would be harder to surf on for you because it will be tough to balance because you a beginner, get the soft top because its less $ and its a better beginning board and if you hit someone it wont hurt that bad

soft tops are a little heavier, but forgiving when you're just learning. Get a regular surfboard, and you'll be happy with it for years. Get a soft top learning board, and you'll have to trade it when you're ready to step up. Longboards are easiest to learn on, and you'll always be able to find something that's ride-able, even if you're in new england!

soft tops are good for a few reasons...  cheaper, can take a beating, and not gonna hurt when you land on it... and believe me you will.  as for performance, nothing like a shaped board.

a regular surf board because they cost less and it gives u more foot grip and easy turns

Go with a softtop , since u are learning.for 1 they are good for getting hit in the head with,they ARE cheaper than a real surfboard , and they are pretty light, so its easy to haul around..Or look for a used board that is wide , thick, and long enough for u to get up easily...So i guess whatever your budget is....
