Both are very nice games.

Carcassonne takes a bit shorter time to play, a shorter time to set up a new game, and I think the rules are faster to explain to new players than with Settlers of Catan.

So, if I'd have to choose between the two, I'd choose Carcassonne.

I'd say Settlers but I really don't like Carcassonne, so I'm not exactly unbiased.  To me Carc is like playing dominoes only with some cute meeples.  Most people really like Carc though.

While both are good gateway games.. I prefer Carcassonne. Settlers of Catan is a good game.. but IMO.. the dice play too much of a role in determing the winner of the game. Carcassonne can be an extremely cut-throat game when played between experienced players.. but at the same time.. can be enjoyed by people who normally do NOT play board games.
