Do you have to be a strong swimmer for coast guard? What is the best job to get that will transfer really well in the civilian life? Do any of them PT alot? How is the work schedule?

  1. I would say the Navy is your best choice. Better career opportunities, you can study for free college courses and get your degree in whatever you want, you have better benefits and if decide to leave the Navy you will have a civilian job guaranteed.

I would recommend anything in the ATF (Advanced technical Field), CT, NUKE (nuclear engineering), AECF, etc.

NUKE in the civilian world, after 6 years in the Navy you can be making up to 90k to 100k a year.

    Good luck Sailor!

Check the link, most CG jobs have comparable civilian jobs.

If you can swim 100 meters and tread water for 5 minutes you can pass the swim.

  3. Better at what?  They both have different misions.  It's like comparing apples and oranges.

  4. Are you for war or peace?

  5. Not sure what your interests are but it all depends on you. Air Traffic Control and the medical corps would be a good thing to consider. Both branches do PT and your schedule can depend on alot of factors but usually its a normal 8hr job.

The Coast Guard is nice but you only stay around the U.S. and rarely travel to different countries (Japan and Europe are 99% out of the question). For the, CG you will have to swim and tread water but it won't be that bad unless you want to be a rescue swimmer.

Personally, I picked the AF. It has the best quality of life and most jobs are easily transferable to civilian life. Plus its hi-tech military branch in the world and has awesome special tactics.

  6. Air Force is better! Who wants to be a puddle pirate?

  7. Each military branch has their pros and cons.   Both branches USAF and USCG will prepare you well for civilian careers depending of course which USAF career field or USCG rate you choose. Both will let you qualify for the GI Bill.

In the USCG, for example, you could study law enforcement, shipboard type skills, search and rescue, homeland security & defense, information technology and many other skillset.  The USCG is in Iraq too, so be careful if you think the CG is only in the US.

In the USAF, you could study aviation type skills, space & air technologies, they have a great information warefare mission.

Bottom line is do what you're passionate about. Both branches fit a unique role in our national security mission.

I personally chose the USCG, but I have a lot of friends who have made a fine career in USAF and others.
