Which is better for a family vacation costa rica or guatemala?

My vote is Guatemala... Lots more diverse things to see.  Mountains, Beach, Rain Forest, Old Spanish Colonial City (Antigua), Maya Ruins (Tikal).

Costa Rica is by far the best place.

Both are a bit dangerous if you don't go prepared, but I'd have to say Costa Rica, because of the fact they get more tourists. They have better infrastructure and somewhat better security then Guatemala.

I say Guatemala, cuz they got the ruins, my personal fav is Tikal (tee-cal) If u go to either one take misquito repellent cuz of Malaria.
