It cost me $2.00 for 1 British Pound.

1 Euro buys .79 British Pound

Do you think it is better to buy Euro and then exchange it to BP when I arrive in London?

No...you'll pay two lots of commission, and don't get any more money

100 USD / 1.57 = 63.69 EUR

63.69x 0.79 = GBP 50.31 before 2 x commission

100 USD / 2 = GBP 50.00 before 1 x commission
