As Cakeluvr points out... most log splitters are hydraulic: it's the difference between an electrical outlet or onboard gas-motor to power the hydraulic pump.

SO... the big question is: HOW close are you to an electrical outlet or generator while you're splitting wood ??

We have a gas-powered splitter because we have twenty acres of land... the tree falls where it falls... you buck up the logs into rounds and split it where it falls.

IF You're getting "rounds" delivered to your yard, I'd say electric is viable, BUT always nice to have tools off the grid even given the price of fuel !!

A cord is 4'x4'x8' stacked... here in RURAL NorCal it is about $150 a cord for seasoned oak, and FREE for pine if you will haul it away.

Why the difference you ask ?? Oak burns MUCH cleaner (creasote), and has more BTU per cord. So SOME land owners almost consider PINE a weed... or a cash-crop to be sold to flat-landers who just want WOOD !!

We burn both here at the ranch because we do our OWN chimney-sweeping.  We also burn 2-3 cords a year

AS to Male / Female use... it is ALL HARD work to split and stack a cord.

All mechanical log  splitters are hydraulic you must mean gas or electric...for around the backyard and occasional use electric works fine, for a pro landscaper or tree cutter go with a gas model....last time I checked a cord is 4ft tall by 4ft wide 8ft long..around here its between $125 and $200 a cord....kiln dried  hard wood cut split delivered and stacked is the most expensive. I scavenge for my firewood and use a Poulan saw and electric splitter....saves alot on the oil bill.
