  1. XFX GeForce 9600 GT x*x is better graphics.

  2. The previous poster is not quite correct. The first number in an Nvidia naming scheme represents which series of card you are using. (7 series replaced 6 series, 8 series replaced 7 series, etc.)

After knowing this, it is easier to grasp that a higher model number does NOT mean better real world performance. The 9600 is made to replace the 8600 and NOT to outperform the 8800, and the 9800 is made to replace the 8800.

In most cases this holds true. In THIS particular case it may depend on a few things. For a mid range card, the 9600 is a pretty stellar performer. Even so, the 8800 still has more raw power, especially in the 512 MB version of the card.

The 512MB 8800 will outperform even an overclocked 9600 by anywhere from 5-25% depending on the game. It simply pushes more pixels out, and it does it faster.

Going down to the 256MB version of the 8800 could change things. Playing at low resolutions it will still stomp all over the 9600, but upping the res to things like 1600x1200 (or higher) will even the gap a bit. Once you start filling the memory up, the 9600 catches up a little bit lowering the performance gap to maybe 5-10%, but the 8800 will STILL eek out a win 99% of the time.

Depending on the price it is up to you. I would go with the 8800 but if you can save 50 bucks and dont need the bleeding edge high end, the 9600 might be an acceptable choice for you. Either way they are both nice cards
