Depends on the music program you use. If you use iTunes, the only option is, of course, and iPod. If you use Windows Media or something like Rhapsody, you can use some cool things like the Zune. My recommendation for an MP3 player is the YP-P2. It has a 3 inch touch screen, plays music and videos, can hold photos, and costs less than an iPod touch.

for easy use get an mp3 its easy to sync all music from windows media player, but if u wana get him something nice get him a ipod touch, its nice for using the internet, viewing pictures, and has great audio.

iPods are coolest, but you pay .99 per song because you must use iTunes.

MP3 all the way cause Ipods are to fragile considering if you drop it the hard disk may be damaged. MP3 isn't like that though as it have flash memory and not a hard disk.
