Which is better in your opinion, Canon or Nikon?

Question

I know there's been a debate about it for years, I have a Canon 400d and my friend has a Nikon d80 and we always do as well, so I wanted some second opinions =)

At the high end, fhotoace gives you the info from a professional's perspective. Historically, Nikon was considered not being as good as Canon at high ISOs. Now the pros are saying that's no longer as issue. In fact a friend of mine feels that Nikon has now surpassed Canon is this area. Nikon was considered to have better color characteristics. I assume that is still true with the new high end cameras.

As a consumer level enthusiast, I honestly don't see much of a difference between the two for comparable models with their smaller 23x15 sensors. The Nikon D40-D80 range seems to perform similarly to the Canon Xti/Xsi. If you look at the DPreview or other reputed sources fortheir comparisons, the differences are minor to non-existent.

Canon is the best I think,I have one 7.1 mega pixels/Power shot SD 1000 and I love it .

Until recently they were both so good, it didn't matter which you bought.

Now with the introduction of the D3 and D700, Nikon has a clear advantage, so if you are starting to build a new system, starting with even an entry level Nikon makes good sense, because eventually you will be buying a new camera body (four or five years) and you will have all the lenses you will need to use the new technology.

On assignment last weekend, my colleagues who shoot Canon's were talking about moving over to Nikon, now that the noise issues found in all digital sensors seems to have been addressed very successfully by Nikon in their full frame line of cameras.  NPS is loaning D3's with matching lenses to pro Canon users for evaluation ... So far there are many D3's showing up at sports venues which used to be 70% Canon.
