So I'm an aspiring photographer and as of right now I only have a little crappy Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W120. Being that I'm only 16 years old and I have no job, it's going to take me a bit to convince my mom to splurge a bit to satisfy my creative appetite BUT that's beyond the point. :) I've had my eye on a Canon Rebel XTi for a while now but I've seen some pretty nice pictures taken with some Nikons. I'm not sure what kind but whatever. So, what do you think is best, Canons or Nikons? SLR of course. :)

  1. Both Nikon and Canon make great DSLRs.  I use Canon, but that is a personal choice based on what and how I shoot.  I know a couple of people who own Pentax and they produce very nice work with them and they love their cameras.

Photoace made a very solid suggestion about going to camera stores and finding the one that fits you the best.  I would follow it and some camera outfits, like Calumet, have camera rentals at reasonable rates so you can try one out for a day or two to see how it really fits you.

Photography has been a love of mine for decades and I am always up for new people discovering some of the things that have kept it so interesting to me for so long.  I started right about your age and I wish you well on yoour camera hunt.

  2. Ehh. Both Canon and Nikon are top of the line camera's. They are both amazing

Canon's cheapest DSLR is a little pricery than Nikon's. Canons cheapest starts about 900 and Nikons 400. If you are just begining in DSLR photography I think you should get the Nikon D60 or Nikon D40.

The only thing I think was a huge diffrence between canon xti and nikons camera's is that it had live view. I didnt think that was worth the extra 500 or 200 dollars. But that's just me. They pictures come out the same pretty much. it really depends on the lense. So i say save ur money on the body and spend more on the lenses

  3. I would suggest you go into a camera store and try holding both the Nikon D40 and XTi in your hands ... see which one fits better in your hands and suites your style of shooting.

One thing you need to know.

Enjoy looking for your new camera

  4. Ya know, it really doesn't matter anymore as the features and image qualities are so similar, across the entire spectrum of SLR brands, that you'll be happy with pretty much any camera in any given price range.

A recent image of photographers at the Olympics in Beijing showed that they were pretty much evenly split between Nikon and Canon.

If the professionals cannot, as a group, choose a clear winner, then there isn't one.

If you can find each camera locally, hold 'em in your hand and see if one feels better to you than the other. Comfort is a big factor, so don't discount it's importance, especially if the technical considerations are too close to call.

  5. Canon EOS 1D Mark III.

  6. nikons way way way better
