Which is better to have coins or star bits in SMG?

I know having 50 coins will earn another 1up, but I never collect that many before I capture the Gold stars. I have spent time shooting the little gold caps or flowers to get the coins to take back to the observatory. I am thinking I am wasting star bits. I see the coins accounted for when the 'score' is being calculated, but that's all. Am I wasting star bits? Thanks

i think coins are good but star bits compare to have the same value. You are right it is a big loss if you waste it on that

Coins. But you should really get both. Don't waste your star bits on flowers for coins just get coins from other stuff.

Shadow is right. You need both Coins and Star Bits. And here's why:

Star Bits Reasons:

1.) Without Star Bits, you won't be able to feed certain Lumas that get hungry and need to be fed. Without Star Bits, you virtually can't complete the entire game. Maybe you can get 60 Stars without them, but if you want all Stars, you'll need to feed those Lumas sometime!

2.) Star Bits not only feed your friendly Luma allies, but they also help fend off enemies too! Have you ever launched a Star Bit at an enemy? If so, you should see them get knocked around by the little candy treat! Star Bits are very good when you're in a pinch and need something for a formidable offense. But remember, don't go crazy with the Star Bits. Fire too many, and you won't have enough to feed Lumas back at the Observatory! Some Lumas need over 1,000 Star Bits and it takes a LONG time to find that many, especially when you start at 0.

Coins Reasons:

1.) Obviously, without coins, you're going to have a few problems getting extra lives. At the Observatory, you're safe as long as you can find a 1-Up Mushroom lying around (I think you can find 5 or more just at the Observatory!) and should stock you up. But really, what happens if you waste those lives on one level? Then you're in trouble! But wait...you grabbed the coins lying around! And you picked up some 1-Ups from them? Looks like it's you're lucky day today!

2.) THIS IS IMPORTANT: COINS REPLENISH HEALTH. Very few people ever remember that coins can heal you. You need to grab a coin every now and then, especially if you've suffered an attack from an enemy! Without coins, Mario's 3 health bars will get crushed right away against challenging enemies or bosses! Without any coins, you're done for.

So basically, you need both. Star Bits advance your game while Coins keep you alive. Without one, the other is nothing. You'll need both to survive. Good luck!

P.S.: I don't think you need to waste Star Bits on flowers. Coins pop up everywhere. Flowers are there in case of emergancies only.

It's better to have star bits. 1 ups are all over the observatory that you can get and you need star bits to give to some of the lumas that will open up new galaxies.
