1/2 is bigger than 1/8.

1/2 is ONE part out of TWO parts, while 1/8 is only ONE piece out of EIGHT pieces.

Imagine it like a pie and you want the biggest slice.  Would you rather have 1 piece of a pie that was only cut into 2 pieces, or 1 piece of a pie that was cut into 8 pieces?  Obviously if a pie is cut into 2 pieces the pieces will be larger than if it's cut into 8!
