i would wait until you get to Cairns...

take a walk along the Esplanade in the city and there are loads of tour booking places that will give you a rundown of the tours available in the area...and they will more than likely be able to give you a better deal...possibly even a package so you can do more than one thing...there is lots to see and do around Cairns, and Far North Queensland...

when you get here you will find many good companies to choose from. some of the smaller tour groups are better because family owned, and the drivers work harder because usually its their business, enjoy your stay.

I'd wait until you get there because there are so many day tours you can take.  It depends on what you are interested in.  I'd hire a car.  Word of caution when going to the tablelands - don't go up/down the Gillies Range (over 300 sharp corners!).  The Kuranda Range is busy and dull.  The Palmerston Range is absolutely beautiful with rainforest all the way (and lookouts to stop and admire the view).  Hope you have a fantastic time..
