  1. The simple answer to your question is a ceiling fan is far more economical.   A large ceiling fan uses around fifty watts on high speed while a floor or portable fan can use up to 200 watts.

  2. basically they are the the same money to operate

  3. Operating costs will depend on the amount of power used by each motor.  Let's start with an assumption that each motor requires the same amount of power to operate (e.g. each motor uses 3 Amps of current on a 110 V line).  Then, your operating costs are identical.

Installation costs will, of course, be significantly different.  The ceiling fan will require hard-wiring for the fan, a pole switch, remote, etc.  The ceiling fan can also cost a few hundred $ depending on the model.  The box fan might only cost $20.

The real question you should probably ask:  Which type of fan would yield the best value to you?  Then, every person could define what the word "value" means to them.

For instance, if you're selling a home, attractive ceiling fans with light fixtures can be a good selling point for the home.  It will add value.  They will also help circulate air in the home.  Many newer homes today are not built with ceiling fixtures (lights).
